Small business energy users require extra safeguards against rising prices, allowing them to secure cheap energy bills, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has stated.
Following the energy price announcements from ScottishPower and British Gas, the organisation wants the government to provide guarantees that energy suppliers will not pass on the carbon price to their customers by hiking prices further.
FSB chair John Walker commented: "There is a huge risk that introducing a mechanism to increase electricity prices generated by fossil fuels will further inflate prices for the smaller players as generators pass on the extra costs to consumers and small firms.
"This concern comes at a troubling time for small firms and is yet another thing that will prevent them from growing their business and taking on staff - precisely what the government is asking them to do," he warned.
Business energy customers could shop around for better deals and opt for fixed-rate tariffs.
