Many Welsh homeowners could find that they are eligible for council tax benefits that could help them access cheap energy, reports News Wales.
Around £100 million worth of council tax benefits remain unclaimed each year in Wales, and Kirsty Williams, the new leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats has encouraged homeowners to check whether they are eligible. The money could help many people alleviate some of the pressure of price rises from energy suppliers, but some residents are put off due to the level of bureaucracy involved in applying, while others do not realise they are eligible in the first place.
Ms Williams told the website: "If a shop didn't give you change, you'd ask for it. But because the government isn't giving people the change they deserve - some people don't like to make a fuss."
Ms Williams added that 47,000 pensioners would be lifted out of fuel poverty in the UK if there was just a ten per cent increase in the number of eligible homeowners making a claim.
