Ed Miliband set to unveil cheap energy efficiency measures - 02/03/2010

Energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband is due to unveil a host of cheap energy efficiency measures today (March 2nd) to make homes warmer and more eco-friendly.

Under the new plans, householders will be able to secure up to £10,000 in "green home loans" through the Pay as You Save (PAYS) scheme, which will go towards the costs of implementing energy efficient measures in the home.

The loans will be administered through local authorities, supermarkets and DIY chains, and homeowners will be allowed to pay back the cost over time as they make savings on bills from their energy suppliers.

"This new approach will allow people to pay for home improvements after they have had them installed rather than before," Mr Miliband said.

He added that it will allow people to cut down on their gas and electricity use and lower energy costs for families, which will be particularly welcome during cold spells.

Mr Miliband will also announce the follow-up to the carbon emissions reduction target programme, which requires firms to encourage energy efficiency.
