Govt approves gas plant amid plans to secure Britain's cheap energy supplies - 06/04/2010
The government has approved a new gas power plant in the north of England, amid plans to secure the future of Britain's cheap energy suppliers.
Construction of the 1,520-megawatt combined cycle gas turbine station is scheduled to take place in Carrington, Greater Manchester.
The plant is owned by energy suppliers Wainstones Energy and is the first to adhere to the government's new carbon capture readiness regulations. The plant is expected to take around 30 months to build and will be fully operational by 2013.
Ed Miliband, energy and climate change secretary, maintained that the plant will play a crucial role in safeguarding the future of Britain's gas supplies.
"As we make the transition to a low-carbon future and our domestic gas reserves decline, we remain vigilant about maintaining energy supplies that are diverse and secure," he said.
"While we remain alert, what was shown this winter when the gas market was tested by extreme circumstances is that the existing gas system is working well."
