The provision of cheap energy is building up to be one of the main battlegrounds in the Scottish general election next month.

The provision of cheap energy is building up to be one of the main battlegrounds in the Scottish general election next month.

According to the BBC, the Scottish National Party (SNP) is focusing on fair energy prices as one of the main selling points of its campaign north of the border, while Scottish secretary Jim Murphy is focusing on the provision of green jobs in the energy industry.

The opposition party will tell voters that only nationalist MPs have and will continue to champion fair fuel prices in Westminster.

The SNP has previously urged the government to take decisive action on rocketing energy problems and accused chancellor Alistair Darling of dithering on the issue.

Last year, SNP Energy spokesman Mike Weir slammed the "shameful exploitation" of vulnerable people by energy companies.

He said: "Positive steps such as the SNP Government's Energy Assistance Package bring welcome help for the fuel poor but firmer action is needed now from the UK government."

The rate of fuel poverty is three-times higher than it is in the rest of the UK, according to the National Housing Federation.
