Scottish inn makes use of renewable cheap energy - 05/08/2010
A historic Scottish inn is making use of renewable cheap energy to reduce its carbon footprint.
Glenuig Inn in Lochaber was constructed on the site of a building burned down by government soldiers hunting Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1746 and is now being fitted with solar panels thanks to a £180,000 investment from Highlands and Island Enterprise, reports BBC News.
The solar panels will be used to heat water, while heat generated from cooling equipment will be recycled. The inn will also make greater use of natural sunlight to illuminate rooms in order to reduce its business energy usage.
Inn boss Steve Macfarlane said the revamp of the inn is necessarily ambitious and wide-ranging due to the building's historic significance.
"The original stonework of the main building bears the marks of a remarkable history," he told the BBC.
"It was right that we should preserve its place in local history and we have made a feature of the original stonework inside the inn."
