Energy price divide between north and south - 08/02/2011
Energy comparison customers in the north tend to pay more for their power, a survey has revealed.
Research from energyhelpline.com has found that there is a north-south divide in the UK with regard to how much householders pay for their cheap gas and electricity, with those in the most expensive area paying £60 more each year than people in the cheapest part of the country.
Individuals in the Scottish Lowlands pay on average £1,192 for their energy needs each year, compared with an annual energy expenditure of £1,132 for those in south Wales.
However, more people could save money if they switch energy deal.
Mark Todd, director of the cheap energy comparison website, commented: "Whether through fear of the unknown, a misguided sense of loyalty or a lack of knowledge, consumers are missing out on hundreds of pounds of savings by not switching supplier.
"When it comes to domestic fuel, the 'do nothing' option is normally the 'pay more' option. Today's energy market is competitive and fairly loosely regulated rather than a fair one. Unfortunately, in such a market, a company exists to serve you but also to make money from you," he added.
