Tidal energy project in Wales 'to power 1,000 homes' - 01/04/2011

Householders in Pembrokeshire might decide to switch energy tariffs once they hear a new tidal energy project has been given the green light to supply power to homes in the area.

Energy secretary Chris Huhne approved the Deltrastream device, which is to be installed at Ramsey Sound near St David's in Wales.

Operated by Tidal Energy Limited, the project is designed to produce enough energy to supply cheap electricity to up to 1,000 homes.

Mr Huhne commented: "The UK's great marine heritage and our engineering genius make the potential for wave and tidal energy here vast. We must make the most of our natural marine resource, not just to cut our emissions, but to boost energy security and create jobs."

He added that the initiative is "exactly the kind of innovative and exciting project I want to see more of".

The Ramsay Sound programme will join Scotland's Sound of Islay tidal energy project in furthering the prospects of marine energy technology.
