Heating oil prices rise - 03/05/2011
Domestic energy users in Cornwall might be persuaded to compare energy deals after a rise in oil prices saw utility bills soar.
The West Briton reported that renewable energy supplier Enact Energy research shows those who are not part of the mains gas network have to pay around £400 a year more for heating and powering their homes.
This is because many householders use heating oil in their homes, but the substance has become around 40 per cent more expensive in the last month due to political upheaval in the Middle East.
Adrian Wright, chief executive of Enact, told the newspaper: "The oil price increases that we have seen are really hitting rural communities very hard, with property owners facing massive price hikes in heating oil.
"In Cornwall, 55 per cent of domestic properties are not connected to mains gas, which means that as a county we face the prospect of paying millions of pounds more annually in heating bills," he pointed out.
Mr Wright suggested homeowners install cavity wall insulation to preserve heat and cut down on their energy bills.
