Open and transparent market is required for cheap energy customers - 01/08/2011

Cheap electricity customers would benefit more from an open and transparent energy market, one of the smaller energy suppliers has stated.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, managing director of Ovo Energy, commented: "We want a more open energy market where power is returned to the consumer.

"Ofgem must take active steps now to enforce transparency and fairness, so the Big Six providers can no longer take customers for granted."

His comments came in light of British Gas parent company Centrica's half-year profit results, which showed the company overall generated profits of £1.3 billion in the six-month period in question.

Mr Fitzpatrick said the announcement, on top of British Gas' 18 per cent price hike, is "another blow to consumers".

"Until the Big Six providers fully explain to bill payers where their money is going, consumers will never trust energy companies," he added.

Customers thinking of switching to Ovo will find just two tariffs on offer, of which one provides 100 per cent of its electricity from renewable energy sources.
