Fuel poverty busters to help households save money - 16/09/2011

In a bid to prevent more energy comparison households from falling into fuel poverty, one housing provider has created a team of experts who will check residents are not spending more than they should on their bills.

Sanctuary Group's 'fuel poverty busters' will visit homes to show householders where they could be saving money by turning down their thermostat by a couple of degrees, installing wall and loft insulation or even moving furniture so radiators are not blocked.

Ian McDermott, director of property services at the organisation, commented: "We were concerned by the news that more people may be forced into fuel poverty and realised we were ideally placed to help make a difference.

"Our maintenance teams can provide on-the-spot advice to residents during routine maintenance visits, helping them reduce fuel bills and keep warm in colder months."

Government figures show a 22 per cent rise in the number of homes in fuel poverty last year, but in reality the situation could be worse.
