Energy comparison customers who face price hikes from the six major energy suppliers have been assured by a government minister that they can get better deals if they compare gas and electricity tariffs online.
Energy secretary Chris Huhne explained that he is determined to get the best possible deal for British energy consumers.
"That means making it easier for people to shop around and switch supplier to get the best deals, boosting competition to help keep prices down, and insisting energy companies insulate millions of homes by next year," he noted.
"I want to see greater protection for consumers and I want to put small companies on an equal footing with the bigger players in the energy sector," the minister claimed, adding that the coalition is working towards greater openness in the energy markets in a bid to strengthen competition.
Mr Huhne's remarks came after he published a White Paper on electricity market reform, which set out plans to reduce customer bills and shift to a low carbon economy.
