People looking to perform an energy comparison and switch gas suppliers should take care to ensure their system is in good working order ahead of the colder months.
According to Jeff Learman, director of communications at Gas Safe Register, it is particularly important to get a gas boiler examined at this time of year as householders come to switch on their heating for the first time since last winter.
"If you haven't had your appliances checked there might very well be problems with that equipment that you simply don't know about," he said, adding that even if a system is working, it may be performing at less than its maximum efficiency.
This could therefore result in people spending more on their gas bills and producing more carbon emissions than necessary, he explained.
Recently, the independent Hills Review found fuel poverty is a "distinct problem" in England and Wales, resulting in around 2,700 deaths a year, which could highlight the importance of making energy bills as low as possible.
