'Nearly a million' Scottish households in fuel poverty - 01/12/2011

A large number of people in Scotland may be able to benefit from performing an energy comparison in order to find cheap gas deals, as fuel poverty is said to be higher than previously projected.

Spokesman for Energy Action Scotland told a committee hearing yesterday (November 30th) that estimates suggesting 600,000 homes will face difficulties in paying their bills fall short of reality, the BBC reports.

In fact, the true number of families spending over ten per cent of their disposable income of fuel is around 900,000, he said.

"The majority of that is caused by the fuel price increases that are biting in just now", Mr Norrie said.

This may be a blow to the Scottish government, which has set out goals of eliminating fuel poverty in the country by 2016.

However, a recent report into the nation's housing stock suggested some progress may have been made towards this, as it claimed the percentage of homes in fuel poverty dropped from 33 per cent to 28 per cent between 2009 and 2010.
