EDF awards funding for school renewable project - 04/05/2012

Energy supplier EDF has awarded funding to a school in the north-east to help it generate cheap electricity from solar power.

The company awarded Egglescliffe School in Stockton-on-Tees £20,873, which will be used to fit an array of photovoltaic panels to the roof of the establishment's sports hall.

Assistant headteacher at the school Alan Richardson said: "We hope that the solar panels will not only reduce our energy bills and our carbon footprint but become an important educational tool, helping us to inform our students about the importance of sustainability."

EDF's Green Fund has awarded more than £5 million to a total of 282 renewable energy products since being launched in 2001, with £2 million of this going to educational projects such as schools, nurseries and colleges.

It supports technologies such as solar installations, wind power and geothermal energy.

EDF is also the official energy supplier for the London Olympics and all the power provided will come from low-carbon sources - 80 per cent from existing nuclear plants and 20 per cent from renewables.
