Council home tenants in a small town in Surrey could see their energy bills go down when cheap electricity devices are installed on their roofs.
The local authority has signed up with Savills Solar to fit photovoltaic panels to selected properties, which will allow people living in them to use free green electricity.
Waverley council will rent out the roofs to the green energy company and use the money generated to fund other energy saving projects, particularly for the tenants not involved in this scheme.
Councillor Keith Webster commented: "It takes us one more step along our strategy to help our tenants with ever increasing fuel prices."
He added that the council has also provided good insulation, double glazing and solar panels, while there are plans to replace old boilers with condensing ones.
