Landlords need to take steps to ensure their properties are protected from any potential damage this winter by improving energy efficiency.
The National Landlords Association has offered tips that can be used along with switching to cheap electricity and gas deals to ensure heat is not wasted.
These include fitting loft insulation that it at least 270 mm deep and draft-proofing gaps in skirting boards and floorboards.
Free insulation may be available to those who use EDF as their energy supplier, as the company recently announced it is offering the material to all customers who do not already have it installed.
Landlords should also show their tenants how the central heating system works to minimise the risk of burst or frozen pipes.
Chairman of the body David Salusbury said improving energy efficiency "provides benefits for all" as renters will see their energy bills cut and landlords will improve the property's energy efficiency rating.
