Pensioners have the option of comparing energy prices and potentially switching suppliers altogether in pursuit of a better deal, reports edp24.co.uk.
Energy companies have pledged to help their most vulnerable customers ensure they are paying the cheapest market rates, but there is nothing to stop homeowners from contacting their supplier to make sure they have the best deal.
Many pensioners are currently living in fuel poverty, where more than ten per cent of their annual income is allocated towards energy bills, but large quantities of benefits designed to assist people in this situation go unclaimed each year.
The government has been criticised for failing to publicise these benefits more effectively, but homeowners can find out exactly what they are entitled to by contacting a Citizens Advice Bureau or another advice centre.
Often, the cheapest deals can be found on the internet, which could be taken advantage of by people who have a home internet connection.
Energy companies blamed a spike in the wholesale market for a series of substantial price rises last year.
