'Nuclear energy suppliers should be encouraged to accelerate progress' - 05/08/2009

Firms looking to reduce their business energy costs may be heartened by news that an expert will advise the prime minister to accelerate nuclear redevelopment.

Malcolm Wicks, MP for Croydon North and also the prime minister's special envoy on energy security, is expected to advise faster nuclear redevelopment through renewed focus on future energy supplies rather than on environmental concerns, reports the Times.

Less than 15 per cent of the UK's national electricity supply was generated using nuclear reactors last year, but as North Sea oil supplies diminish and reliance on imports grows, Mr Wicks is expected to warn that energy security could be threatened without more nuclear power.

Mr Wicks told the paper: "It's a dangerous world and when we emerge from recession there will be a global grab for diminishing supplies of energy. Where is it all going to come from?"

Energy security has been a pertinent issue as the UK is becoming more reliant on imported oil, but a dispute between Russia and Ukraine in January this year affected the gas supply to several eastern European countries.
