Midlands smart meter roll-out could please those looking to compare energy prices - 01/10/2009

A smart meter manufacturing company based in Warwick in the Midlands could enable more people to pursue cheap energy rates by rolling out its products locally.

First:utility has unveiled a deal that will involve providing free smart meters to homeowners throughout the Midlands, enabling them to monitor their energy usage on a half-hourly basis so they can identify areas where savings can be made.

The company plans to use its deal to turn the Midlands into a smart meter hotspot and the device could appeal to a range of people as it can help reduce domestic bills by ten per cent.

Mark Daeche, chief executive officer of first:utility, said: "As a successful and growing company based in the Midlands, we wanted to give all households across our region the opportunity to be some of the first people to use smart metered energy."

The government has announced plans to orchestrate a nationwide roll-out of smart meters within the next few years, but specific details have yet to be decided.

Smart meter systems are due to be installed at a range of facilities owned by the Ministry of Defence.
