Cheaper deals available from major energy suppliers - 06/10/2009

Homeowners looking to compare energy prices could be interested to see a range of price cuts from some of the major suppliers in recent days.

Spurred by lower tariffs introduced by smaller companies First Utility and Ovo Energy, E.On has implemented a £19 price cut on its Fix Online 3 dual fuel tariff, which is only available on the internet, reports Which?

In addition, EDF Energy is offering changes such as a six per cent discount each month to customers who pay by direct debit, amounting to extra savings of £29 a year for people on dual fuel tariffs, £24 for those on single fuel gas tariffs and £34 for customers who prepay.

None of the major suppliers are offering wider price cuts and Dr Fiona Cochrane, senior policy adviser at Which?, said: "Consumers want to see energy companies lower prices as much as they can quickly, not tweaking their prices like this to stay at the top of the tables."

The pricing war could encourage more consumers to switch energy companies, although all the major energy firms have been criticised in recent months for failing to lower prices on the same scale as last year's substantial increases.
