Govt announces funding for cheap gas projects - 09/11/2010

The UK is set to launch its next competition for businesses constructing carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects on gas-fired power plants to produce cheap gas, the climate change secretary announced this week.

Cabinet minister Chris Huhne said the UK is determined to lead the world on CCS technology, which captures and contains carbon emissions before they can build up in the atmosphere.

"In the long run, carbon capture will help provide us with a secure and affordable energy system and we want to encourage companies with projects on both gas and coal-fired power stations to come forward," Mr Huhne explained.

In March this year, energy suppliers E.ON and Scottish Power were awarded funding for design and development projects in a bid to build the world's first commercial-scale CCS demonstration plants.

Mr Huhne added that the government is committed to funding four commercial-scale CCS projects and has pledged up to £1 billion for the first such demonstration venture.
