Energy secretary 'will not stand by' as suppliers raise energy prices - 08/07/2011

With the news that the second of the Big Six energy suppliers will be hiking its energy prices, Chris Huhne has pledged that he will not "stand by and watch this happen".

The energy and climate change minister said British Gas' announcement, made today (July 8th), that its gas rates will go up by 18 per cent for domestic energy customers, will be "tough" for consumers who are struggling to pay their bills.

"I refuse to stand by and watch this happen," he said.

"I'm pushing the Big Six suppliers to help their customers overhaul their draughty homes and understand the best tariffs on offer, and I'm backing new entrants to bring more competition to the market."

The minister said Britain's electricity market "has to change" to escape the "fossil fuel addiction", turning instead to green energy, renewables and nuclear power.

British Gas' price hikes will come into effect next month, adding an average £190 a year to dual fuel domestic energy customers.
