Private renters who may not be able to switch energy tariffs because of their contract should have the right to live in a warm and healthy home where they can enjoy cheap electricity bills.
This is the opinion of Consumer Focus and other organisations, which are calling for a minimum energy efficiency standard for all private rented homes by 2016.
Audrey Gallacher, director of energy at the lobby group, commented: "With almost 12 million people expected to be living in fuel poverty when the latest round of price rises hits, tackling this problem is a major issue.
"Private rented housing is amongst the coldest and most likely to leak heat - meaning bigger bills and a greater risk to renters' health."
She explained that a minimum energy efficiency guarantee would save tenants almost £500 a year on their energy bills while cutting nearly 200 million tonnes of carbon emissions each year.
Meanwhile, four of the Big Six energy suppliers have now announced price rises for gas and electricity customers.
