England increase in onshore wind - 01/05/2012

The number of onshore wind turbine in England has grown significantly over the past few years.

A study by the Campaign to Protect Rural England revealed this is taking place up and down the country, from Cornwall to County Durham.

Chief executive of the organisation Shaun Spiers said while onshore wind is an essential part of the energy mix needed to meet carbon reduction targets, it is important such installations are not placed in inappropriate locations.

He added: "The government must take responsibility and set out far more clearly a framework for meeting the country's energy needs while protecting our matchless countryside."

Commenting on the report, head of campaigns at Friends of the Earth Andrew Pendleton said wind power can help defeat climate change - which is one of the biggest threats to the British countryside - and also assist in tackling spiralling fuel bills.
