Energy comparison customers may be losing more money by leaving their electrical appliances on standby.
Research from Carillion Energy Services revealed three-fifths (61 per cent) of households never use standby saver products, which adds up to more than £1 billion a year in wasted energy.
Turning off microwaves, dishwashers and washing machines at the mains might seen pointless, but the International Energy Agency calculated that up to 15 per cent of domestic electricity consumption is wasted by appliances being left on standby.
Therefore, domestic energy users could notice a significant reduction in their energy bills simply by turning off at the walls all the appliances that are not currently in use.
Carillion commented: "Sixty-one per cent is far too high and with fuel bills likely to increase over the next few years it's important to get more people using standby saver products."
Two of the Big Six energy suppliers have already warned customers that price hikes could be on the way within the coming months.
