Homeowners have been advised that making an energy comparison could help them to secure a cheaper electricity and gas supply.
The Metro's business and personal finance correspondent Cheryl Latham explained how staying with a company can lead to individuals paying higher premiums.
"Some suppliers, rather than rewarding loyalty, have reportedly been taking advantage of it – charging increasingly more to those they know are unlikely to move provider," the expert remarked.
However, switching supplier could help people to make savings of up to £200 per year, it was noted.
Other tips for saving money include paying by direct debit, as settling bills quarterly with cash or cheque "can be pricey".
Ms Latham also warned against prepayment plans, as such meters usually leave people worse off than online payment schemes.
Annie Shaw, editor of CashQuestions.com, recently urged homeowners to "get savvy" with their bills and shop around for the cheapest energy tariff.
