Are business energy users becoming greener? - 02/12/2010

Companies which use business energy to heat and power their offices tend to be getting in a more environmentally friendly mindset, the Cumbria Green Business Forum has pointed out.

John Barwise, chair of the business to business initiative, commented: "Businesses are moving away from the notion that environmental issues represent some sort of inconvenience they have to deal with to satisfy their shareholders."

He noted that reporting carbon emissions can help firms save cheap energy and money.

"Greenhouse gas emissions reporting shows where energy savings can be made which help to reduce overheads, improve business performance and protect the bottom line," he explained.

However, the sticking point comes when the company's book keepers need to be convinced of the benefits of investing in environmental technology as a guarantee of success in the future.

Mr Barwise's comments come in light of a report commissioned by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, which showed voluntary reporting of greenhouse gas emissions boosts companies' cost savings, green credentials and relations with investors and customers.
