Business energy clients looking to find cheap electricity and gas deals may be concerned to hear it has been predicted prices will continue to rise over the next decade.
Delivering the Department of Energy and Climate Change's annual statement, secretary of state Chris Huhne told the House of Commons government schemes to increase efficiency will inevitably have a negative impact on some commercial users.
"By 2020, policies are estimated to add 19 per cent to the average energy bill of businesses that are medium-sized energy consumers," he stated, while larger, power-intensive users could see expenses rise by anything between two per cent and 20 per cent.
He added that, while enterprises must play their part in cutting emissions, it is vital they stay competitive, which is why the government is working to introduce measures to support energy-intensive industries.
Recently, the Confederation of British Industry said these firms are already being hit hard by rising gas and electricity prices and so must be assisted if the UK is to meet its low-carbon goals.
