People looking to compare energy suppliers to find cheap electricity deals using solar power may be interested to hear that energy minister Greg Barker has defended changes to the system of Feed-in Tariffs (FIT).
Earlier this week, he announced a cut in the amount of money that will be paid to households with such panels for the power they generate, a move that campaigners warned could seriously damage the growing industry.
However, in an article for the Guardian, Mr Barker warned the current system is "unsustainable", as demand for the technology has been three times greater than projected when the scheme was launched 18 months ago.
"The generous pot of £867 million secured for the Feed-in Tariff scheme by the coalition last year will be completely devoured if we don't act now," the minister stated.
Mr Barker said the coalition's proposals will make the FIT initiative more intelligent and better able to respond to changes in the market, while offering better value for money for customers in the long-term.
