Govt seeks views on future gas strategy - 04/05/2012

The government has launched a new call for evidence to determine what can be done to improve the UK's gas strategy to make sure consumers can get secure, cheap energy in the coming years.

Plans laid out by the coalition in this year's Budget call for new measures to increase investment in the gas industry and help ensure the UK's energy security, make the best use of the country's natural resources and meet environmental goals.

Questions being asked in the call for evidence will seek to establish the role gas-fired power stations will have in the coming years and the strengths and weaknesses of the fossil fuel in helping the shift to an affordable low-carbon economy.

It will also ask what barriers there are to developing clean gas technology and how economic factors in the area may change in the future.

Recently, several of the Big Six energy suppliers were criticised by Greenpeace for an over-reliance on gas, with the environmental group noting British Gas, npower, EDF and E.ON all used the fuel for at least two-thirds of their new power capacity since 2006.
