British Gas owner Centrica has warned energy bills could be set to rise this summer, which may persuade consumers to carry out an energy comparison.
In a statement released this morning (May 11th), the firm announced it is currently trading in line with expectations.
It noted wholesale gas costs have risen, which means it is going to have to up tariffs in the coming months.
"Non-commodity costs - which are also largely outside of our control - are expected to add a further £50 to the cost of supplying the average household this year," said Centrica.
It added the overall trend for the price of energy is therefore going to remain on an upward trend for the foreseeable future.
This comes shortly after a study by the Institute for Public Policy Research claimed the general public needs to be encouraged to switch energy provider, due to the fact this would stimulate the market.
