Calderdale pensioners encouraged to seek cheap energy advice - 02/03/2009

Pensioners in Calderdale, West Yorkshire, are being encouraged to seek energy advice, which could involve homeowners investigating how to switch energy companies.

Todmordern News reports that Citizens' Advice Bureau (Cab) has teamed with Calderdale council's Housing Energy Action Team (Heat) and Calderdale Primary Care Trust, to promote more efficient heating as part of Affordable Warmth Week.

Anyone heading to a Calderdale Cab will have their energy use assessed and have the option of seeking additional assistance from the Heat team. Pensioners aged over 65 are being especially targeted.

Rory Deighton, chief executive of Cab, told the paper: "Cab's aim is to tackle poverty by the use of quality advice and information. Helping people understand what help is out there is a natural extension of what we do."

He added that low-income households have been badly hit by high energy costs and poorly insulated homes, with pensioners comprising a large chunk of over three million fuel poor households in the UK.

The government has pledged to insulate all UK homes in the next few years.
