Cheap energy meters to create jobs - 01/07/2009

A new scheme aimed at installing cheap energy meters in the UK's homes will create 2,600 jobs, it has been revealed.

British Gas hopes to introduce its smart meters over the next three years, abolishing the need for estimated bills and allowing customers to more closely regulate their gas consumption.

Some 1,700 new workers will be recruited by the company, while 900 will come from other energy firms.

Of these positions, 2,100 will be filled by experts who will install the cheap energy meters, while the remaining 500 will be offered in client support and management.

In related news, a fifth of homes in the UK could cut their carbon emissions by as much as 60 per cent, it has been claimed.

According to Green Building Press, many houses and flats constructed in the 1960s could streamline energy consumption with retrofitting schemes and cheap energy meters.
