Cobalt Energy named preferred bidder for cheap energy waste facility in Exeter - 24/12/2009

People in Exeter looking to compare energy prices and access cheaper rates could be interested to hear that Cobalt Energy is the preferred bidder to build the city's Energy From Waste facility.

The plant will take 60,000 tonnes of waste every year that would otherwise be sent to landfill sites and will convert it into energy when it opens in 2013.

Construction is due to begin in the next six months and could encourage more local homeowners to switch energy companies to escape domestic tariffs that have fallen only slightly throughout the course of this year.

Ian Crummack, managing director of Cobalt Energy, said: "These facilities have a vital part to play in dealing with the waste that remains after recycling in a clean, safe and practical way, with the benefit of producing energy too."

In other news, the government is considering introducing legislation removing the need for businesses and public buildings to get planning permission to set up microgeneration equipment.
