ScottishPower aims for lasting cheap energy supplies - 31/03/2010
Access to renewable cheap energy could be on the cards for ScottishPower customers thanks to the firm's continued expansion of its renewables business.
The company has confirmed the purchase of a Pelamis Sea Snake, designed to harness the power of waves.
The new technology is scheduled to be deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre off Orkney in the summer of 2011.
Head of policy at ScottishPower Renewables Alan Mortimier said: "This project will play an important role in turning Scotland's marine energy potential into reality."
He added that other schemes to harness wave power are being considered for other parts of Scotland and this project will help to speed up their development.
"Wave and tidal power generation offers huge potential for significant environmental and economic benefits," Mr Mortimer said.
Customers may be able to take advantage of such economic benefits in the long-term through having access to guaranteed energy from suppliers - taking out the risks associated with relying on a finite resource for fuel.
