Public 'will not be switch on to green deal' - 06/05/2011

A significant proportion of cheap gas users will not take up the green deal, according to Sustain Worldwide.

Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director of the organisation, commented: "The nut that the government and the private sector has to crack is to get the public to truly engage with energy efficiency.

"It's proving to be a struggle, as even when the offering is free - such as insulation for the elderly or those on benefits - the public doesn't rush to engage."

He noted that although the details of the green deal have not yet been unveiled, it is unlikely that the public will "switch on massively to the issue".

Financial incentives could persuade some people but this is "not going to happen" in the current economic climate, Mr Miller added.

His comments come in light of Federation of Master Builders' research revealing 44 per cent of its members believe homeowners will not take advantage of the green deal when it is launched next autumn.
