Green Deal could boost construction sector - 02/06/2011

The government's Green Deal could see an explosion of greener homes being built, cheap gas customers might be pleased to learn.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders, pointed out that the Green Deal retrofit agenda provides "possible hope" for the UK's construction industry, which has suffered since the onset of the financial downturn.

"There is a skills gap [...] if we are going to deliver the Green Deal, but how we create that demand still hasn't been worked out. Hopefully next year we will see an uptake in the demand for retrofit skills," he said.

Mr Berry's remarks were made after climate change minister Greg Barker unveiled plans to safeguard consumers when they use money from Green Deal schemes to pay for energy saving work around the house.

Mr Barker said: "The Green Deal will be the biggest home improvement programme since the Second World War, shifting our outdated draughty homes from the past into the future, so it's vital people can trust it."
