Renewable energy sector 'will see continued growth' - 01/02/2012

People looking to reduce their carbon footprint and get cheap electricity from renewable energy sources may be pleased to hear the sector is projected to grow in 2012.

This is according to a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), which predicted the industry in Scotland is set to follow a worldwide trend for greater use of green power, the Press Association reports.

PwC partner and energy and renewable analyst Jason Morris said there will be an increase in the number of deals done to invest in renewable energy in the medium term.

"Scotland has nailed its colours to the mast in terms of the renewable sector and energy efficiency ... and the benefits are trickling through," he added.

The commitment to the sector was evidenced recently by the approval of £7 billion worth of investment by SSE and Scottish Power for network upgrades to support renewable power generation.

Chief executive of Scottish Power Energy Networks Frank Mitchell said this is the "most significant" move to improve the UK's energy infrastructure in 60 years and will ensure the grid is capable of supporting 21st century systems.
