South-west to benefit from £8m investment to boost energy efficiency - 21/06/2012

Social housing tenants in the south-west of England could be able to get cheap gas and electricity in the future as a result of a new initiative in the region.

The Ready for Retrofit programme from the Energy Saving Trust will pump £8 million into the local economy to help deliver eco-friendly renovations.

It will assist local businesses in preparing for schemes such as the Green Deal, Energy Company Obligation and Renewable Heat Incentive.

The project could be highly valuable, as research by npower this week found 69 per cent of social housing organisations say a lack of funding is a barrier to improving the efficiency of properties.

Head of south England at the Energy Saving Trust Ian Hutchcroft said the scheme will be "a huge boost to the local economy, supporting businesses to help tens of thousands of people reduce their fuel bills and making the region a more sustainable place to live and work".

He added the legacy of the Ready for Retrofit initiative will include a strong green economy, new jobs and a skilled workforce.
