Scottish govt lays out marine energy plan - 22/06/2012
Proposals to produce more cheap energy from wave and tidal sources in Scotland have been set out by the nation's government.
Plans highlighted in the new Action Plan include agreements to develop 1.6GW of marine energy generation off the country's coast.
It will also see the opening of the world's first commercial wave power plant and consent for an advanced tidal stream project near Islay.
First minister Alex Salmond said the new publication shows great progress has been made since the first road map for marine power was unveiled in 2009.
He added: "With the right support, our wave and tidal resources can be fully mobilised to play a key role in delivering the EU's ambitions for low carbon energy generation and sustainable economic growth."
The Scottish government has set a target of generating the equivalent of 100 per cent of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2020, including marine, hydro and wind sources.
