British Gas price hike 'this month' - 05/07/2011

Domestic energy users should compare gas tariffs now ahead of a British Gas price rise that will take place before the end of this month, according to BBC business editor Robert Peston

He wrote that an "imminent rise" in energy prices will happen before parent company Centrica's financial results are published on July 28th.

He claimed this was backed up by Ofgem research showing that current wholesale gas costs are running 30 per cent above last year's prices.

British Gas last hiked its prices in December 2010, but the wholesale price of gas has risen 16.6 per cent since the start of 2011.

Mr Peston believes the energy supplier will raise its tariff rates by between 15 and 17 per cent for gas, with electricity prices going up by a slightly lesser amount.
