SWA pledges reduction in business energy use - 05/06/2009

Cheap energy rates may be attainable for companies within the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) as they plan to further embrace efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

The organisation says its members aim to reduce fossil fuel usage by an impressive 80 per cent over the course of the next 40 years, which will save over 750,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

Over £100 million worth of changes have been authorised by the organisation in the last 18 months as companies seek to improve their environmental performances.

Gavin Hewitt, chief executive of the SWA, said: "Spirit production has increased by over 20 per cent over the last decade, yet our energy efficiency has also improved by a similar amount - a great achievement."

He added that there remains work to be done, despite the improvements the organisation has already made.

The SWA will issue annual reports detailing its efficiency figures and achievements.

Energy prices rose substantially last year and although cuts have since been implemented, they remain high.
