Complex jargon has been cited as the reason many firms are failing to secure cheap energy deals.
A survey by British Gas revealed more than half of all businesses (57 per cent) believe their energy suppliers make tariff information too complex.
Meanwhile, a quarter of companies said they spend too long dealing with their bills, contracts and pricing renewals because the language is too confusing.
A further 25 per cent said they would need to spend more time trying to understand the jargon in order to feel confident they were getting the best deal.
As a result, a third of businesses are now calling for the energy industry to publish guidelines on managing energy that are outlined in a simple and easy to understand language.
