A general failure to compare energy practices and switch to the most efficient schemes is resulting in the wastage of energy worth £15 million every day, new research claims.
According to the Confederation of Business and Industry (CBI), homeowners and businesses need far more education and greater motivation if they are to pursue cheap energy costs and reduce their carbon emissions.
The organisation said that just four of 24 climate change targets have been met by the government and a disappointing result from the recent Copenhagen climate summit has increased pressure.
Richard Lambert, director-general of the CBI, said: "Rather than piecemeal plans to tackle energy waste, we are calling for the government to publish a low-carbon delivery plan to help the UK save energy."
He praised the government's recently-announced boiler scrappage scheme, which will encourage the installation of more efficient boilers in homes.
Homeowners could also install insulation and more modern, energy-efficient white goods.
