Cheap energy boiler scrappage scheme comes to an end - 02/04/2010

The government's cheap energy boiler scrappage scheme has finally closed to new applicants.

The scheme's 125,000 applications have been snapped up as consumers rushed to take advantage of the £400 offered to upgrade to more energy efficient central heating systems.

Householders with boilers rated "G" were able to apply for vouchers from the Energy Saving Trust to put towards an A-rated boiler or renewable heating system such as a biomass boiler or a heat pump.

Energy and climate change minister Lord Hunt said: "The scheme's been a great success and is already helping people cut down on their fuel bills. An 'A-rated' energy-efficient boiler can help save around £200 a year [on] fuel bills and reduce emissions."

He added that the initiative has also boosted England's plumbing and boiler manufacturing industry, sustaining work for 130,000 installers and up to 25 UK-based boiler manufacturers.

Since the scrappage scheme was launched in January, all the major energy suppliers that sell and install boilers have matched the government's offer, giving customers money off the cost of a new efficient boiler.
