An industry association has warned that new European legislative proposals could result in the closure of up to 14 power plants in the UK, putting the country's cheap energy security at risk.

The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said recent amendments to the draft EU Industrial Emissions Directive would require power plants that do not adhere to pollution targets to be closed down by 2016.

This could lead to the closure of up to 25 per cent of the UK's energy producing capacity, which could adversely affect energy suppliers and businesses.

John Cridland, deputy director general of the CBI, said: "The majority of EU member states want a phased introduction for this directive and it is vital that the new UK government makes protecting our energy security one of its top priorities."

He also called for power companies to be given until 2021 to get ready for the proposed changes so the transition into a low carbon economy is much easier.

The European Wind Energy Association recently said no more fossil fuel burning plants should be built after 2020 if Europe is to have any hope of meeting its 100 per cent renewable energy target by 2050.
