Education 'needs cheap energy focus' - 04/05/2010

An expert has called for the education system to place more focus on sustainability and cheap energy issues.

According to Sara Parkin, founder, director and trustee of Forum for the Future, putting sustainability at the forefront of school life gives pupils a better understanding of the environment and ecology issues.

Speaking at the recent Green Collar Economy Forum, she pointed out that universities are now starting to focus on sustainability but green issues should be included in curricula much earlier.

"Ideally I would insist that anybody leaving public education should be sustainability literate," Ms Parkin said.

"In the European Union nobody drops either science or philosophy until the end of their secondary schooling, even though it's not their major subject."

Experts believe that a greater focus on sustainability will also encourage consumers to improve their energy efficiency, which will enable them to save money on bills from energy suppliers.

In the 2008-09 academic year, the Leading Sustainable Schools research project took place, involving 56 schools around the country who are currently leading the way in developing and promoting sustainability in their schools.
