An MP has embarked on a mission to get a new law passed that makes it compulsory for energy suppliers to tell their customers if they are not on the cheapest tariff.
John Baron, MP for Basildon and Billericay, is pushing the new coalition government to force electricity and gas companies to make it clear on customers' bills whether or not they are on the lowest tariff and how they can switch energy suppliers.
Mr Baron stressed that there are currently around 4,000 different tariffs, which causes confusion for customers. Moreover, around half of consumers who switch energy providers typically end up on a more expensive tariff.
"Clarity is desperately needed from the energy companies, which are all too able to provide it," Mr Baron said. "It is important, therefore, [that] the coalition government addresses this point."
He added that the Department of Energy and Climate Change has given its assurance that it will examine the best way in which it can implement the proposal.
