ScottishPower raises standing charge by £40 - 01/07/2011

Consumers might be inclined to switch energy providers after hearing that ScottishPower electricity customers are facing a £40 annual increase in the way they pay for their utility.

The energy provider's average standing service charge will go up from £70 to £110 a year at the same time as the ten per cent hike in electricity tariffs comes into effect - August 1st.

A spokesman for the company said the charge includes all of the costs on energy bills that do not vary by household consumption.

"Our standing charge for electricity has now been brought in line with some others in the market," the representative explained.

"These fixed costs apply to all users of electricity and we are required to ensure that our prices are cost-reflective."

Meanwhile, there is growing speculation that British Gas will be the next of the Big Six energy suppliers to increase its tariff rates, which could happen in a number of weeks.
